Deck 7: Language and Children With Autism
1
Why are self-stimulatory behaviors such as head banging not, on their own, diagnostic of autism?
It is not enough to simply use self-stimulatory behaviors to diagnose autism because it is one of the most
complicated areas of medical and educational diagnosis. A child must show six or more behaviors
characteristic of the disorder for the diagnostic criteria of autism to be met. The required diagnostic criteria
are used to rule out any other possible diagnoses.

When should standardized tests be used with children suspected of having autism spectrum disorders?
The nature of the social impairment in children with autism makes most norm-referenced testing unreliable. Many of these children lack the ability to attend to stimuli presented in a fixed manner; they may have no consistent verbal or nonverbal means of responding; and the responses they produce may be contaminated by the intrusion of echolalia or idiosyncratic language. The best results may, therefore, be obtained from a standardized observation protocol such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule.
3
Describe the phonology of children with autism.
One of the generalizations that can be made about the language abilities of children with autism is that they typically do not show severe specific developmental impairment at the levels of segmental phonology (consonant and vowel production).
