Deck 10: Mixed Methods Procedures
1
Describe convergent, explanatory sequential, and exploratory sequential mixed methods designs.
The convergent mixed methods design is when a researcher collects both qualitative and quantitative data at the same time, analyzes them separately, and then compares the results to determine if the findings are similar or dissimilar. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design occurs in two phases, the first being quantitative and the second being qualitative. The quantitative data are analyzed first and used to inform the second phase. An exploratory sequential design also occurs in two phases, the first being qualitative and the second being quantitative. The goal of an exploratory model is to explore a topic with a smaller sample of participants so that a later quantitative phase can better meet the needs of the researchers.
2
Give an example of a research study you might design using mixed methods procedures and indicate your reason for choosing a mixed method design.
Student answers will vary. However, according to the text, these are reasons to choose a mixed method design:
-Comparing different perspectives drawn from quantitative and qualitative data
-Explaining quantitative results with a qualitative follow-up data collection and analysis
-Developing better contextualized measurement instruments by first collecting and analyzing qualitative data and then administering the instruments to a sample
-Augmenting experiments or trials by incorporating the perspectives of individuals
-Developing cases (i.e. ,organizations, units,or programs)or documenting diverse cases for comparisons
-Developing a more complete understanding of changes needed for a marginalized group through the combination of qualitative and quantitative data
-Evaluating both the processes and the outcomes of a program,an experimental intervention,or a policy decision

3
Case study mixed methods design can use qualitative and quantitative data to generate cases before the study begins or at the end based upon evidence that has been collected.
