False
2
Define zero tolerance policies and discuss some of the problems related to these policies.
Zero tolerance policies mandate the enforcement of predetermined consequences most often severe and punitive in nature which are intended to be applied regardless of seri- ousness mitigating circumstances or situational context.Problems identified include: students of color are disproportionately disciplined using these policies; may be develop- mentally inappropriate for adolescents e.g.interfere with adolescents' ability to meet their unique developmental needs such as forming close peer relationships autonomy identity formation support from adults other than one's parents and academic self-efficacy); such policies have not increased the consistency of school discipline schools with higher rates of suspension and expulsion appear to have less satisfactory ratings of school climate e.g.conducive to learning); and data are mixed regarding the extent to which parents actually support zero tolerance policies.
