Deck 10: Freires Model of Adult Education
1
Discuss the three-phase approach of the Freirean model.
The three phase approach of the Freirean model is given below:
1. Naming: in this phase, the facilitator has to ask -what is the problem? The community members are also part of the discussion to try and find out the problem. The priorities are also listed.
2. Reflection: in this phase, the facilitator asks -how do we explain this situation? This can also be called a dialogue stage. The objects for discussion are called codes and the process is called codification. A code is a physical representation of an issue identified in a community. In some programs, facilitators give a five step questionnaire after the participants undergo the codification process.
3. Action: in this phase, the facilitator asks - what can be done to change the situation? This process is not based on the product or the outcome. It does not give any favorable outcome.

The acronym SHOWED in the context of the Freirean model is shown below:

• H - Happening
• O - Our lives
• We - Why
• D - Do
S stands for what do you see here? It refers to the problem seen by the people in that particular area. H stands for what is really happening? It refers to the root cause of the problem. The main cause of the problem needs to be identified. O stands for how the story related to our lives. It refers to the situation as to how the problem is related to the lives of the people of the community.
W stands for why. This refers to the question as to why this person acquired this problem. The reason why this person has acquired the problem needs to be considered. Do indicates what can we do about it? The action required to remove or resolve the problem is considered. Sometimes, an individual action is enough while for some cases; the whole community needs to help.

Briefly describe the five constructs of Freire's model.
The five constructs of the Freirean model are given below:
1. Dialogue: a dialogue is an exchange between the recipients of information and donors of information. It is an opportunity for both the parties to express their opinion.
2. Conscientization: it is the identification of the systemic forces of oppression which are not seen. We need to identify the source of oppression. The team needs to work together to remove the systemic forces of oppression.
3. Praxis: it refers to active reflection or reflective action. By working on a specific project, we can make the person to have reflective action by following the steps in the project.
4. Transformation: it refers to the relationship that identifies the person as a social and political person. By discussing the social and political impact of specific issues with the person, the person will usually try to change his behavior.
5. Critical consciousness: it refers to the political organization of those people affected in a negative way. These negative effects can be discussed and effort made to reduce them.
