Explain the three stages of the General Adaptation Syndrome.
Solution:
General adaptation syndrome (GAS) is a stress syndrome characterized by sequenced physiological responses to the presence of stressors. It involves three stages, namely, the alarm, resistance and exhaustion stage.
These three stages belonging to the general adaptation syndrome are explained as follow:-
Alarm stage:
When at the first-time body get exposed for any circumstance which considered as dangerous, instantly it gets ready for the arising problem. This is marked as getting into alarm stage. These unintentional changes triggered by the fight and flight response and controlled by the hormonal and nervous system.
Resistance stage:
Going through this stage, the body tries to retain its internal equilibrium. As staying in the prior stage of alarm, for a longer period of time body is unable to optimize its functioning and therefore will try to cope up the risk, or overcome the problem or minimize the intensity of feedback up to controllable level. Going through this stage, one might take steps to relieve stress or deny the situation or isolate himself from others.
Exhaustion stage:
This is a phase where the physical and the psychological resources that are used to overcome the stress seem to be consumed. The time period, the amount of effort, and energy needed to achieve retrieval determine how the body becomes exhausted by exposure of the stressors. As one gains more control and balance, there is faster recovery from stress whereas long term exposure to stressors often results in the overloading body system that might result clinical depression.
