Deck 1: Exploring Human Sexuality: Past and Present
1
Why do you think "sex sells" when our culture traditionally has had a problem openly talking about sexuality?
Sexuality is a unique feature of humans and there are several dimensions attributed to this concept. There are many factors leading to prevention of open discussion regarding this subject; ranging from religious beliefs to misunderstood facts and misleading opinions.
Sexuality draws enormous curiosity and a compelling attraction. However, as the topic is still not openly discussed due to various reservations and mind-sets, the idea of sexuality is attractive to majority of individuals. The attraction to sexuality in a rather discreet manner is the reason for "sex sells".

The Bible has had a profound impact on our attitudes toward sexuality. Do you think that it is still influential? In what ways?
Religion is a force that unites large number of individuals and is one factor that can have a profound uniform impact on a large group. A major influence on humans regarding sexuality is by the Bible.
With advancements in science and increased awareness, the religious influences on sexuality are waning and they are no longer completely relevant for the current society.
Changing perceptions on a topic or phenomenon is common with better understanding. The scientific method relies on 'evidence-based' understanding of a concept and hence, thoughts as provided solely by religious or traditional mechanisms are no longer relevant.

How different do China's and India's sexual histories seem to you today? Are they different from our Western views of sexuality?
Every Nation and country has a unique history and deep rooted beliefs and philosophies. China and India are two countries with rich history from several aspects, including for sexuality.
China's sexual history focused on increasing the sexuality by differentiating male and human sexes and their roles in reproduction.
India's sexual history was through Hinduism and explains that life is a continuous process without gain or loss, similar to energy transformation. This line of thought provides for 'life-after-death' process and sexuality is considered as a factor that contributes to this line of thought.
Both China's and India's views on sexuality differ from those of the Western views. The views of the West on sexuality are largely influenced by the Bible and not by the Chinese or Hinduism philosophies.
