Deck 4: Newspapers
1
Compare your local paper and an alternative weekly. Choose different sections, such as front page, editorials, and classified ads. How are they similar; how are they different? Which one, if any, speaks to you and why?
A newspaper and a weekly are taken into consideration so as to analyze its differences and similarity.
Differences
• The front page of the weekly is more colorful with high quality printing which includes the images of celebrity. While the front page of the news paper is not much attractive which includes the main news and some photos.
• The Editorial of the news paper includes many useful general topics which is very informative. In weekly no priority is given to the editorial section.
• The ads in news paper are given under classified ads section while in the weekly each page is associated with an advertisement.
Similarity
Both the newspaper and the magazine can be considered as an effective advertisement media which can gain the attention of the public in some way or the other.

What factors led to the development of the penny press? To yellow journalism?
The densely populated city of N Y, a center of commerce and confluence of cultures, gave rise to the penny press, primarily successful because costs were borne by advertisers and readers alike. The desire for larger profits and to garner the attention of the masses led to the advent of yellow journalism.
3
What are the similarities and differences between wire services (or news services) and feature syndicates?
Wire services and feature syndicates are much alike in the fact that they are both cost saving and resource pooling activities news outlets created to broaden coverage while lowering individual cost.
