Question
Jose, 7 years old, and his mother live alone in a one-bedroom apartment close to his school. Most afternoons Jose walks home alone, lets himself into their apartment, and watches television until his mother comes home from work. His favorite after-school snack consists of potato chips and a soda or fruit drink. For dinner, Jose's mother usually brings something home from a local fast food restaurant because she is "too tired to cook." She knows this isn't good for either one of them. Jose's mother is currently being treated for high blood pressure, and the pediatrician has expressed concern about Jose's continued weight gain. However, Jose's mother doesn't see how she can change anything given her work schedule and limited income.
What environmental risk factors may be contributing to the family's health problems
Question
Identify several preventive practices that promote children's oral health.
Question
Explain the benefits of physical activity for both children and teachers. Conduct several classroom observations with different age groups to identify ways that teachers can incorporate more aerobic activity into children's daily schedule. Describe how several of these activities could be modified for children who have limited vision or are in a wheelchair.

Question
Maddie was in tears when she finally decided to show her mother the message a friend's mother had posted on her Facebook page. The mother blamed Maddie for the low grade her daughter recently received on a group science project, and accused her of "not working as hard as the other team members" and "turning in sloppy work." Maddie was reluctant to let her mother see the posting despite the fact that it had been bothering her for several days. She fears that her mother will contact school authorities or the friend's mother now that she knows and worries about the repercussions.
School-age children have been quick to adopt cyber-bullying as a preferred method for harassing their peers. Access to cell phones, tablets, and computers has made it increasingly easy for children to reach their victims and to engage in non-confrontational bullying. They consider cyberbullying to be reasonably anonymous, transparent, and unlikely to result in after-school detention.
Although victims are spared physical injury, they often suffer significant humiliation, emotional trauma, and find it difficult to avoid unless they turn off all cell phones and computers. Many administrators believe cyber-bullying is reaching crisis levels in their schools. School boards are establishing disciplinary policies in an effort to curb malicious postings and online harassment. State legislators have also begun to introduce bills that hold children and their parents, in some instances, responsible for engaging in cyber-bullying.
Think About This:
Why do some children feel the need to bully others
What behavioral changes might a parent observe if their child was being harassed
Why not just tell children to turn off their cell phones and computers to avoid being bullied
Should children who engage in bullying be expelled from school Why might this not be the best option
Should parents be held responsible when children engage in cyber-bullying What are the pros and cons
Question
Explain why children living in poverty may experience lower self-esteem.
Question

Question
Define the term self-concept. Provide specific examples of things teachers might do that could have a positive and negative effect on children's self-esteem.
Question

Deck 1: Childrens Well-Being: What It Is and How to Achieve It
1
Explain why young children are at high risk for unintentional injury.
Young children are considered high risk for unintentional or accidental injury. Children often do not possess the appropriate motor skills for a task; they also lack the ability to recognize dangers that would be obvious to an adult. Many children cannot appropriately judge speed, time, or distance, putting themselves at additional injury risk. Young children also do not possess the same problem solving skills as older children or adults, making it difficult for them to foresee consequences.
2
That most brain development occurs between ages 2 and 5 is most apparent when you observe the contrast between a young child and an adult attempting to master which task
a. mathematics
b. inference and reasoning
c. learning a foreign language
d. reading skills
Neural plasticity is greatest between ages 2 and 5 years, when the brain experiences the majority of its development. Researchers believe there are frames of time in which neural connections in a given region of the brain form more readily than others. Children in this age group are able to quickly learn and retain new information and skills. Adults, however, are developmentally no longer capable of forming as many new neural connections. Therefore, the correct answer is c., learning a foreign language.
3
Discuss why it is important to involve and include families in children's health education activities. What steps can a teacher take to be sure that children's cultural beliefs are respected
It is critical for teachers to involve families in discussions of children's heath education activities. Teachers are trained to understand child development and are able to provide information and insight to parents and caregivers; such discussions can help families set realistic expectations of a child. Families are also able to inform teachers of cultural and familial practices that influence a child's behavior, allowing teachers to develop a unique report and approach to teaching a given child. An involved and regular dialogue between teachers and families helps children to acquire positive social-emotional development.
