The quality improvement (QI) project established a community partnership among public school leaders, school nurses, and a university nursing program to provide childhood obesity screenings and a health educational intervention for third graders in a rural, medically underserved Alabama elementary school. The goals of the collaborative endeavor included addressing childhood obesity by establishing a screening and prevention program and creating an ongoing community-academic partnership between a rural county school system and a local school of nursing. The foundation of the project was designed to incorporate clinical protocols and guidelines into the public school system through the utilization of baccalaureate nursing students to augment the heavy workloads of public school nurses in identifying obese children and those at risk for obesity. Additionally, the promotion of healthy living habits was emphasized in an age-appropriate health education-teaching program.
