One reason for the decline in turnout within the electorate was that with the extension of the franchise to women in 1920, the potential electorate's size doubled overnight and, like previous expansions, these new voters took time to become engaged in the process. Thus voter turnout levels dropped initially but would recover by the mid-1930s.
