You are alone when you are by yourself. You can feel lonely in a crowd of people. Loneliness is an emotion arising from unmet needs for affection and self-validation from a psychologically intimate relationship. Loneliness not only involves feelings of distress, desperation, disconnectedness, and depression, but lonely people are at risk for a number of health and cognitive problems.
