Deck 9: Romantic Relationships
1
Do men and women desire the same or different characteristics in a mate?
In a large part, women and men desire the same characteristics in a mate -someone who is honest, warm, affectionate, kind, and shares their interests. However, there is a sex difference in that men desire mates who are physically attractive, and women desire mates with resources and ambition.
2
What do actual interaction paradigms, such as the speed dating studies, show abut sex differences in mate preferences?
They show that differences that men and women express are not borne out by their behavior. After interacting with someone, the sex difference in mate preference does not materialize. And mate preferences do not map on to actual behavior.
3
What is the evolutionary explanation for sex differences in mate preferences?
Men and women behave in ways to maximize the survival of their genes. For men this means mating with as many partners as possible and fertile partners - attractiveness is a sign of fertility. For women this means mating with someone who will have the resources to ensure the survival of their children.
