How do Gonczi, Hager and Oliver (1990) define a 'competent professional' and why do attributes need to underlie the concept of 'competence'?
A competent professional has the attributes necessary for job performance to the appropriate standards (Gonczi, Hager & Oliver, 1990). That is, the professional possesses a set of relevant attributes such as knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes. It is necessary to use the term 'attributes' because competence is an intangible construct - it cannot be observed directly.
