A variety of hypotheses have been proposed regarding various psychiatric disorders. For each question, match the person or persons with the most relevant area of study from the list below.
Sacks ___

A)modern psychosurgery
B)cognitive behavioral therapy
C)Parkinson's disease
D)bipolar disorder
Parkinson's disease
2
Distinguish between Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease in terms of the neurotransmitter abnormalities suspected to underlie the symptoms for each condition.
Huntington's disease has decreased GABA and an increase in dopamine activity. Parkinson's disease has decreased dopamine projection from the substantia nigra to the frontal cortex, basal ganglia, and spinal cord.
3
What is the HPA axis? Describe any possible abnormalities in its functioning related to depression.
The HPA axis, or hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal circuit, governs the stress response and release of stress hormones. Regarding depression, it is suggested that the levels of stress hormones are out of balance and lead to some of the cognitive dysfunction exhibited by those diagnosed with clinical depression.
