Japanese city that was destroyed by an atomic bomb developed by the United States in 1945. As many as 80,000 inhabitants perished almost instantly from the force and intense heat of the explosion. It is estimated that by 1950, as many as 200,000 additional victims had succumbed to their injuries, especially burns and the terrible effects of radiation. Cancer and genetic deformations caused by exposure to radiation continue to affect survivors and their descendants today.
