Deck 11: A: Factorial Design: I Lost My Phone Number, Can I Borrow Yours Do Pickup Lines Really Work
1
Describe at least two benefits of factorial designs.
Factorial designs have the benefit of being able to draw conclusions with regard to cause and effect. Many other designs do not allow causal relationships to be tested. In addition, factorial designs permit the testing of interaction affects, which mimics the real-life complex relationships among variables.
2
Distinguish between a within-subjects factorial design and a between-subjects factorial design.
A within-subjects factorial design requires that each participant receive all levels of all independent variables. This can lead to a higher likelihood of hypothesis-guessing as the participants would have more opportunities to speculate on the true purpose of a study. The within-subjects design helps control for individual variation among levels.A between-subjects factorial design necessitates that each participant only needs to receive one level of each independent variable.Between-subjects designs are sensitive to individual differences and are more difficult to control.
3
Define factorial design and describe a 3 × 3 factorial design study.
A factorial design is an experimental design that has more than one independent variable and both variables are able to be manipulated.Participants were asked to watch a video clip (10 seconds,30 seconds,or 90 seconds)and then draw a picture (animal, person,or place)in a study examining creativity.Since both variables are able to be manipulated and each independent variable has 3 levels, this would be identified as a 3 × 3 factorial design.
4
Define hybrid design and describe a 2 × 3 hybrid design study.
