Deck 9: A: Multi-Group Design: Im Feeling Hot, but Is the Earth Hot, Too
1
Use a multigroup design to develop a research study focused on Internet gaming.
Multigroup design uses an experimental design with three or more groups. One potential study could examine multiple levels of Internet gaming with three different groups: high users, low users, and controls. The control group would be individuals with no recent Internet gaming practices in the last year. The high-user group would comprise individuals who practiced Internet gaming for more than five hours a day for the last year. The low-user group would comprise individuals who practiced Internet gaming for less than one hour a day for the last year. All three of these groups would have their heart rate monitored over a period of one week.In addition these individuals would complete self-report measures regarding social skills and communication styles.
2
Develop a research question that could be analyzed through a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA)and describe what information this analysis would provide.
A research question that would be appropriate for analysis via ANOVA could be: Do different feedback conditions (positive, negative,or neutral)result in differing degrees of self-consciousness? An ANOVA tests whether responses from different conditions are essentially the same or whether the responses from at least one of the conditions differs from the others.A manipulation check is important for both the study and the analysis. It must be determined if the participants picked up on the type of feedback they were provided by the research confederates (positive, negative,or neutral). An ANOVA will only tell us if one condition is statistically different from the others, not specifics as to which conditions are different from one another. After running the data from the feedback study, the ANOVA would provide us with an F score,a significance level,an effect size, and degrees of freedom between and within subjects. These results are enough to determine whether follow-up tests are warranted or if there are no significant differences among conditions.
3
Describe one advantage and one disadvantage to using self-report measures in research practice.
Self-report measures provide the benefit of obtaining information directly from the participant in an informal and quick manner;however, there is no way to determine if the participant' ratings are their true opinions or beliefs on the particular topic. They may be answering questions in a way they believe the researcher or society wants them to,so their answers may not be an accurate reflection of their true thoughts.
4
Develop a theory that helps to explain the phenomenon associated with the smell of fresh-baked goods and the motivation to spend money.
