Exercise 3
CASE: From Barista to Manager
Summary of the Case The case considers the situation of Sophie, a barista at an upscale coffee shop. After three years of employment Sophie has been promoted to store manager. She generally works seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with a one-half break for lunch. Her job seems to focus on getting to know customers and making sure that the store runs smoothly.
Sophie generally enjoys her job and interactions with customers and staff. However, she feels somewhat ambivalent about her position. She regularly works 55 hours per week, but she is not eligible for overtime pay. Further, Sophie believes that she is still doing basic barista work such as making coffee and stocking supplies. She does engage in managerial activities such as interviewing job applicants and providing new hires training. However, she feels somewhat constrained inn her managerial because of the presence of the district manager, who has definite ideas on how she should operate the coffee shop. Further, her managerial role requires that follow company guidelines.
She is now wondering whether she has been promoted to save on overtime costs.
-Do you think the coffee chain is in compliance with labour/employment standards of your jurisdiction?
