Members of the subphylum Hexapoda include animals whose bodies are divided into three tagmata, have five pairs of head appendages, and have three pairs of legs on their thorax. Insects have mouthparts that project from the head. Insect body systems and behaviors have been adapted in countless ways for life in virtually every terrestrial habitat on earth. Social organization in insects permits the specialization of groups of individuals, called castes, for performing certain functions within colonies. Members of the 30 insect orders interact with all other forms of life, including humans, in ways that make them one of the most important of all animal groups.
