The metric system, a standard system of measurement, was officially adopted in france in seventeen ninety one. Today it is used in continental europe and in other parts of the World, except for english-speaking Countries. It is also used by the Scientific community around the globe. It is based on the meter, which measures a little more than 36 ins., or about one yard. Another metric unit is the gram. One hundred grams are known as a centigram; one thousand grams are called a kilogram. These units measure an object's Mass. A gram is very small. In fact, an ounce, a measurement in the english system, equals 28 grams. The liter, another metric unit, measures volume. A liter equals about 1 Eng. quart.
The English system, still in use in Great Britain and the United Sts., has different units. For example, measurements of length include the inch, the foot, and the yd. The inch is equivalent to about two-and-one-half centimeters in the metric system. The English system also includes a furlong, which is two hundred and twenty yards or about two hundred and one meters; it also includes the mile, which is five thousand two hundred and eighty-nine feet-slightly more than one-and-one-half kilometers. finally, the Engl. System measures volume in pints, quarts, and gallons. One gln. is approximately four-and-one-half liters.
