3. When Mark Twain his real name was Samuel Clemens was four years old he moved with his family to Hannibal Missouri. This city is on the Mississippi River and it served as the basis for a fictional town that Twain wrote about in his novels.
4. Emily Dickinson the great nineteenth century American poet who lived in Amherst Massachusetts was influenced by at least four other writers William Wordsworth Ralph Waldo Emerson Charlotte Bronte and even William Shakespeare.
5. Writing thought provoking novels which sometimes proved contro versial Richard Wright 1908-1960 helped to express the concerns fears and hopes of an entire generation of African Americans. However Wright was also an important essayist whose non-fiction reflected important concerns about poverty and race relations in the United States during the 1930s. His major novels are Uncle Toms Children and Native Son ; his non fiction works include Black Boy and The Ethics of Living Jim Crow which are autobiographical.
