Exercise 130
Rewrite the following paragraph to correct word-use problems in the margins and between the lines.
Alan Paton (1903-1988), who's novels zeroed in on the struggle for human and civil rights in South Africa, was that country's finest author and writer. Paton opposed the political system known as apartheid, the principle purpose of which was to keep the races a part and separate. More importantly, it also denied basic liberties to blacks and other non-whites in the country of South Africa. Time and time again, Paton was hassled by the cops. The reason for this was because he wanted to ditch the whole apartheid system. The guys in charge of the country even busted the Liberal Party, which Paton had established in 1953 to oppose the Nationalist Party. The Nationalists favored and supported apartheid. The government also confiscated Paton's passport and tried to shut him up. But that was easier said then done. Paton's message about the evils of apartheid got out through his novels, the most famous of which is Cry the Beloved Country (1948). Paton's believe in racial equality among people of different races contributed to the eventual abolishment of apartheid in 1995.
