What are the differences between race and ethnicity ? Give some examples that illustrate the differences.
Explanation
Meaning of race and ethnicity:
Race is a concept, which divides people into various groups or populations. This division has been made based on physical characteristics. On the other hand, ethnicity is a population group and its members can identify each other based on common shared culture or tradition or nationality.
Difference between race and ethnicity:
Ethnicity is not simply a person's race; it is something more than race. Ethnicity involves customs, learned behavior and tradition. Ethnicity is somewhat flexible, because it is a person's wish to decide whether to accept or reject the same. Race cannot be changed, because it is a person's biologically engineered features. Skin and hair color, skin tone and eye are some of the elements included in race.
Even tendency towards the development of certain diseases comes under race. Race will not have any globally learned custom or behavior. On the other hand, ethnicity includes learned cultural behavior, which is accepted by the region throughout the globe. Race is mainly about the indication of the heritage. Ethnicity can be altered, but it is not possible to alter the race.
Example illustrating the difference between race and ethnicity:
Mr. C belongs to Country A and by seeing him itself, one can understand about his race. Specialty of his color, hair, and eye clearly shows that he is from country A and it shows his race. On the other hand, cultural factors will indicate a person's ethnicity. Cultural factors include ancestry, regional culture, nationality and language.
Conclusion:
Race and ethnicity are used simultaneously for indicating biological and sociological factors. Race cannot be changed, because it includes inborn qualities. On the other hand, ethnicity can be altered according to one's wish; it is not constant as race. One can either follow his culture or he can accept another.
