Discuss the choices that must be made before writing a history of psychology. Include in your answer a distinction between presentism and historicism.
Explanation
The choices are made prior to writing the history of psychology and for this, there are too many approaches. One approach emphasizes the influence on the nonpsychological matters like political climate, technological advancement and economic conditions. Another is the great person approach that highlights the works of the great personalities, such as Aristotle, Freud Ralph and many more. The other one is the historical development approach , which display how the various individuals gave their contribution to change the idea through the years. Eclectic approach is the approach is an attempt to draw out the best approach involving the possible viewpoints. It is an inclusive of views from the past and present and its contributions. So, these are some important approaches that can be considered while writing the history of psychology.
Stocking in 1965 gave an approach to history, called presentism , which is the study that understands the past in terms of present knowledge and standards. The evaluation and interpretation of past events in terms of contemporary knowledge and standards is known as presentism. It is a form of viewing the present events in the way they have evolved from past and history. Anything which is important today might have evolved in the certain way through the ideas and contributions of people/theorists in the past.
He also gave another approach, which he called historicism , in contrast to presentism, it is a study of past for its own benefit and there is no relation made between the past and present. To understand a topic or a particular subject, one has to understand where and how it has started and evolved, though the same ideas and thoughts are not believed or followed in the present.
