The three major types of microorganisms are bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. Another type of microorganism, a virus, is different from the other microorganisms in that it cannot replicate on its own. They can only replicate once inside a host organism by using the host's cells replication machinery. Other types of microorganisms, in the form of protozoans and fungi, are usually larger than bacteria and archaea and sometimes composed of a few cells rather than just one.
