Cellular phones are an evolving technology when a new phone with improved features is being launched everyday but this does not justify the question, 'is cell phone safeSeveral studies have revealed adverse effect of cell phone on various biological organisations. More or less every level is affected by the radiations emitted by cell phone whether it is plant, animal birds or human. We discuss effect of cell phones on various levels one by one:-
A science experiment performed a group of students' revealed that such radiation coming out from phone and other signals can stunt plant growth. They took two batches of cress seeds and grew them in two different conditions. First batch was kept in a room with normal condition with no radiation; whereas another batch was placed in a room with two routers emitting almost same frequency of radiation as cell phones. They found that seeds which were not exposed to radiation grew normally while the other grown in routers room did not grew at all.
A similar experiment showed trees located closet to wireless router developed browning and dying of bark and leaves. Also some leaves developed-lead like shine due to death of the epidermal cells.
Emission from cell phone is found to interfere with cryptochrome molecules. Some animal's insects and bees use cryptochrome for navigation. In one study, researchers fixed cell phone to bee-hive and powered it for fifteen minutes two-times a days. After three months they found that population of bee have decreased, production of honey and egg has also reduced. Because cryptochrome disruption leads to the failure of bees to reach back to their place so population reduced to almost half.
Mobile phone not only affects animals and plant but also human being. Some studies have shown that extensive use of cell phones by males decreases semen quality by reducing number of sperm count, their motility, viability and normal morphology. In case of females cell phones radiation can harm developing fetes. Cell phone exposers during pregnancy may results in behavioural defects in children.
This radiation poses more risk to children than adults as their brains are still developing also size of heads is smaller than those of adults.
Besides these complications there are ways to prevent any undesirable situation:-
• First and foremost we should limit use of cell phone-use it only when necessary.
• We should keep phone in bag or purse instead of pocket- our lower body absorbs radiation more quickly than head.
• We should avoid using phone in low network-because much stronger radiation is emitted.
• Always purchase phone with low SAR-Specific Absorption Rate-it measures the radiofrequency absorbed by the body.
• We can use text message option instead of calling.
