Deep-sea organisms survive without sunlight by evolving symbiotic relationships with chemosynthetic bacteria, feeding on detritus and the occasional large food item that sinks from above, or using bioluminescence to find food. Bioluminescence is also used to identify potential mates and avoid predators.
