How are reflexes, modal action patterns, and general behavior traits alike? How do they differ?
Explanation
Reflexes, modal action pattern and general behavior traits are to varying degrees dependent on genes. General behavior traits can be influenced by learning. The explanation is given below.
Reflex
Though it is a behavior caused by natural selection, reflex can be defined as a relationship between a specific happening and a simple reaction to that happening.
As an example, when a person who is driving on the road sees an accident spot, he automatically slows down and is very careful in his driving for the next few minutes. This is an example of a reflex.
Modal action pattern
Though it is also a behavior caused by natural selection, the modal action pattern is a kind of naturally selected behavior seen in a series of related acts in all or mostly all the members of a particular species. They are also known as fixed action patterns or species specific behavior.
To illustrate, Cobra, a snake species warns approaching predators by raising its hood and producing a hissing sound. This normally scares the predators. It has a highly venomous bite for predators that do not pay any heed to the warning.
General behavior trait
Though it is also a behavior trait caused by natural selection, a general behavior trait is an inclination to display a certain kind of behavior. In other words, there is a high probability that a person would act in a particular way in a specific situation.
To illustrate, a general behavior trait of Americans is to be aggressive and boisterous compared to Japanese.
