A New Organization Structure
Yesterday, Tom Andrews was officially promoted to his new job as hospital administrator for Cobb General Hospital. Cobb General is a 600-bed hospital located in a suburban area of Cincinnati. Tom is extremely excited about the promotion but at the same time has some serious doubts about it.
Tom has worked at Cobb General for three years and had previously served as the associate administrator of the hospital. Although associate administrator was his official job title, he was really more of an errand boy for the former administrator, Bill Collins. Because of Tom's educational background (which includes a master of hospital administration degree) and his enthusiasm for the hospital, Tom was offered the administrator's job last week after the hospital?s board of directors had asked for Bill Collins's resignation.
Tom was now looking at the organization chart for the hospital, which had been pieced together over the years by Bill Collins (see Exhibit 2). In reality, each time a new unit had been added or a new function started, Bill merely had the person report directly to him. Tom is worried about his ability to handle all of the people currently reporting to him in his new position.
