Some companies pay overtime for all time worked over 8 hours in a given day. Use this method to complete this payroll ledger. Overtime is paid at the time-and-a-half rate. (See Example.)
Finding Overtime Each Day
One week, Jason Polanski worked the hours shown. Given that his regular pay is $10.10 per hour, find gross earnings.
SOLUTION
Polanski worked fewer than 40 hours this week. Still, his company pays time and a half for any hours over 8 in a day, so he will earn some overtime. The table shows that he worked 28 regular hours and 6 overtime hours.

Some careers require unusual hours and do not pay overtime for over 40 hours worked in a week or 8 hours in a day. An example is a firefighter, who may work 24 hours and then get 48 hours off.
