Why is focal length important when using the oil-immersion objective?
Explanation
The oil immersion objective exhibits highest magnification and allows a clear view of most of the microorganisms. The object to be viewed under the oil immersion lens is immersed in a drop of oil. The oil minimizes refraction of the light rays passing through the object and guides them straight upward through the lens.
To view the object under focus in best resolution, the object must be located at an accurate focal length. The focal length of an objective and diameter of its lens are directly proportional. The focal length is shortest with the oil immersion objective. The oil immersion lens is the most delicate and expensive parts of the microscope.
When using an oil immersion objective, it is important to know the focal length, which is between 1 and 2 mm (depends on the diameter of the lens). This helps to minimize the damage or scratching to the oil immersion lens or the slide.
