Exercise 1
John has made big changes in his life. An IV drug user for more than 5 years, he recently completed an inpatient rehabilitation program and got serious about staying off drugs. His cousin, Bill, suggested that John move west to a quiet rural area and work on Bill's farm. John had lived in the city all his life so he took Bill up on his offer, figuring it will be a true fresh start. John loved the peace and quiet and adjusted to the physical labor. Things went well for a few weeks, and then John fell ill. His head was stuffy, his nose ran, he had a cough, ran a low-grade fever, and his glands (actually his cervical lymph nodes) swelled. No matter how much John slept, it was never enough. The mystery illness would hang around for a few days and then seem to go away, only to come back in a few days. Frustrated and a little scared, John finally went to see Bill's doctor.
The doctor ran some blood tests, including a differential white cell count, and found that John's T cell count was normal, and there were no signs of HIV antibodies. However, John's eosinophil, basophil, and neutrophil counts were elevated. What do the symptoms suggest now that AIDS has been ruled out? __________________________________________________________________________________
