The idea to undergo screen test for sickle cell hemoglobin gene in the couple going to be married is appreciated because this will give an idea whether the couple is carrier for the gene or do not contain the gene. The child may acquire recessive allele for sickle cell trait when the male parent is a carrier for the gene. When both the male and female are carriers for the gene then the child may acquire defected gene from both the parents and it would be a serious problem.
The prenatal diagnosis is available to detect the defected gene in the fetus. Depending on the presence or absence of one or two gene copies of defected gene, it can be decided to continue or to abort the pregnancy. Therefore, it would be always a good idea to have screening test before marriage and prenatal screening during pregnancy.
