Adam Company uses a job costing system to keep track of the 2,000 jobs that typically are in the factor)' at any one time. The direct materials, direct labor, and manufacturing overhead costs are stored in a production cost transaction file on magnetic disk. A computer program sorts this transaction file by job number and then uses the sorted file to update the open (unfinished) job file, which is also maintained on magnetic disk. An unfinished jobs report is prepared from the open job file and is delivered to the production manager.
