Pick any major television network and describe some planning and control activities that its managers would engage in.
Explanation
Planning Activities:
Take the ABC television network for example. Like any organization, some planning activities will include goals, along with the specific steps required to achieve the goal. A goal ABC might have is "to increase ratings." Some questions ABC might have to answer would include:
Who is our target audience
What types of topics is our audience interested in
When is our audience most likely to be home
Which writers will we hire
How will we determine which shows to pick up
Keep in mind there are many more questions ABC will have to answer in order to reach its goal.
Each answer is a step ABC will have to take to accomplish its goal. Once ABC has answered all the necessary questions, it will need a plan. It would be wise for ABC to create a budget encompassing the steps it will need to take to achieve its goal. For example, ABC will have to determine how much to pay its writers or what production costs will entail.
Control Activities:
Control activities are primarily to find out if and why performance exceeded or did not meet expectations. ABC would probably employ a focus group comprised of individuals believed to be in the target audience to determine if it has chosen shows that will be of interest to its audience. ABC might also prepare a performance report to compare if production costs come under or over budget and how to adjust for costs in the future. This way, ABC can determine whether it should get rid of some shows or ineffective practices during production.
