Sustainability can be defines as a phenomenon that aims at preserving the richness of the available resources in such a way that they are not destroyed by the utilization rather equal opportunities are left for the future generations. This view emphasizes on protecting the world's resources through preservation, regeneration and development.
In broader sense sustainability implies utilizing world's resources in a responsible manner so that the needs of the various stakeholders as well as future generations can be met.
Sustainable Development
According to World Commission on Environment and Development, sustainable development can be defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Sustainable development is a phenomenon as well a process. It is a continuous process which aims at development of individuals, teams and organizations.
Sustainable Development has four distinct features:
• It occurs at various levels ranging from global, regional, local, organizational, team and individual levels.
• It is an intergenerational concept. The process comprises of transference from one generation to other.
• It consists of three interrelated domains namely, social, economic and ecological.
• Sustainable development is a complex process consisting of phases and activities aiming at continuous development of human systems.
Sustainability is a holistic concept that encompasses social, environmental and economic resources. It is a continuous process that balances factors such as resource goals, stakeholder goals, static and dynamic efficiency goals, and individual and team development. It also aims at balancing stability and change and creation and destruction.
