Edition 10ISBN: 978-1133046639 Exercise 1
Assume that you are a project manager at a biotechnology company, working with managers from research, production, and marketing on a major product modification. You notice that every memo you receive from the marketing manager has been copied to senior management. At every company function, she spends time talking to the big shots. You are also aware that sometimes when you and the other project members are slaving away over the project, she is playing golf with senior managers. What is your evaluation of her behavior? As project manager, what do you do?
Explanation
It has been noticed that the marketing manager in the biotechnology firm I work for spends a lot of time networking with upper level management as well as making them aware of all of her activities via email. There are many times when everyone else is working she is also playing golf with them. She seems to have a high level of interpersonal skills that make her successful in what she does.
Being a project manager many of my skills are on the decisional and technical end of the spectrum. I would like to progress on the interpersonal end of my managerial skillset so I think I will make more time to network as she does.
