Exercise 17
Objective
To improve your skills at job simplification.
Skills
The primary skills developed through this exercise are:
1. Management skill - decision making (organizing requires designing jobs)
2. AACSB competencies - analytic skills and reflective thinking skills
3. Management function - organizing
Preparing for Skill Builder 4
For this exercise, you will use job simplification for your morning routine by following the steps below.
1. Make a flowchart by listing exactly what you do every morning from the time you get out of bed until the time you get to school/work in step-by-step order. Be sure to number each step and to list each activity separately. (For example, don't just write "Go to the bathroom," but list each activity you do while in the bathroom to prep for the day-shower, shave, brush teeth, comb hair, etc.)
2. At the end of the day (or whenever you have some free time), do a job simplification analysis of your flowchart to see if there are any activities you can eliminate, combine, and/or change the sequence of.
3. Based on your analysis, develop a new flowchart that eliminates, combines, and/or changes the sequence of the tasks you typically perform every morning.
4. Consciously follow the steps of your new flowchart until it becomes routine.
