The precursors of today's engineers listed in the quotation from Wickenden had no classes and few or no books from which to learn scientific principles. How can you explain their success?
Explanation
Knowledge, skills and creativity of a person is independent of their formal education. These are the inherent qualities of an individual; education, technical skills and processes are only required, to shape them.
Way back engineering was considered to be an art rather than science. The success of engineers in the past" can be explained, on the basis of following facts:
• Engineers of early era were entirely depended on their own talent and creativity and believed on inventing the things rather than copying the ideas.
• They used to improve their skills, with the help of practical training and apprenticeships.
• They used to learn engineering skills and knowledge from earlier generations of engineers, and in turn, used to pass it down to their predecessors.
• Their success depended on heat and trail method and they never worried about the failure.
Therefore, their beliefs, inspiration, hard-work and dedication to learn oneself led towards the development and innovation of new engineering ideas and techniques. Thus, engineers of past didn't required any books or formal classes to achieve success.
