Motivating People in a Foreign Country
From the day you joined the firm, you have actively sought an international position. Last week you were finally assigned to be an assistant plant manager in an appliance assembly plant in Guangzhou, China. Upon learning that you got the job, your new boss has already sent you an ominous welcoming e-mail that concluded with: "I was great in the states where I knew what people want. In this place I feel like a fish out of water and have no idea what to do. Our productivity and quality is way off the last few months and if I do not get these folks motivated I will probably be out of a job. Can't wait for you to arrive. Happy travels."
How would you proceed? What would you recommend for building motivation in this foreign land and why?
