Exercise 3
Enriching the Boring Job
You share an office suite with four others. The five of you are blessed to work with a secretary who is exceptional at what she does. She handles all clerical requests in the office in a timely manner and with a high level of quality and presents a professional image to all who visit or call in to the office. The only problem is she has just come to you and said her job is boring. As she accurately points out, she is relatively isolated in her work and does the same tasks repeatedly. In addition, she rarely knows whether she is doing a really good job or how she can improve.
What makes a job enriched? What general strategies might make this job more interesting and fulfilling? Are there relatively simple things you could do that might help? What personal and organizational factors need to be considered in deciding whether to significantly change a job description and expectations? What is likely to happen if you do nothing?
