Exercise 7
Critiquing an Existing Performance Evaluation Form
Shown in the following is an authentic reproduction of the performance appraisal used for the servers at a typical chain restaurant (disguised here as "Chez Beaumaire"). Recognizing that you have recently completed a management course and are up to date on the latest evidence and best practice, your boss asks you to do three things:
1. Briefly make the case for him that effective performance appraisal is important enough that the managers at his restaurant should care enough to improve their form. Illustrate your arguments specifically in terms of the positive outcomes for that restaurant (critique the existing form with respect to its strengths and weaknesses: What does it help them accomplish? How does it limit them?).
2. Make recommendations for improvement-including some examples or illustrations of things you think would better help them meet their performance evaluation objectives. Be sure to include an explanation of why your improvements are better than what they currently do and also why these improvements will not create an overwhelming amount of extra work or hassle.
