Exercise 2
Making a Positive First Impression
Ever since you were a young child, your passion has been music. You love music in all its forms, play an instrument yourself, and want to make your passion your vocation-your dream is to work in the music industry. However, once in college you quickly learned that, because so many people share your dream, it is exceptionally difficult to get a job in the music industry. As luck would have it, however, your current management professor has two personal friends who are senior officers (one in human resources, the other in marketing) at Sony Music, and he has invited them to make a presentation to your class. Knowing of your lifelong interest, he has asked if they would be willing to spend half an hour with you after the presentation and they have agreed. How would you prepare? How would you try to make a good first impression? How might you appropriately try to leverage your professor's relationship? Would there be any absolute taboos (things never to do) or common mistakes to avoid here?
