Exercise 2
Overworked?
In the following discussion, Iris is a middle manager and Peggy is a first-line supervisor who reports to her.
IRIS: Peggy, I've called you into my office to speak to you again about the late report.
PEGGY: I know it's late again, but I'm so busy getting the work out that I don't have time to do it. I'm always the first to arrive for work and the last to go home. I push hard to get the job done. Sometimes I end up redoing employees' work because it's not done properly. I often get headaches and stomach cramps from working so intensely.
IRIS: I know you do. Maybe the problem lies in your time management ability. What do you usually do each day?
PEGGY: Most of each day is spent putting out fires. My employees constantly need me to help them with their work. The days just seem to speed by. Other than putting out fires, I don't do much.
IRIS: So you can't get the reports done on time because of the number of fires. What is your approach to getting the reports done on time?
PEGGY: I just wait until there are no fires to put out; then I do them. Sometimes it's after the deadline.
IRIS: You are going to have to make some definite changes if you are going to be a successful supervisor. Do you enjoy being a supervisor?
PEGGY: For the most part I do. I think I might like to move up the ladder some day. But I like the hands-on stuff; I'm not too thrilled about doing paperwork.
IRIS: If you develop your time management skills, I believe you will find that you can get the job done on time with less stress. On Monday the company is offering a time management workshop. I took the course myself; it's excellent. It really helped me a lot when I was in your position, and still does today. It teaches you a three-step approach. Do you want to attend?
PEGGY: Yes, but what about the work in my department?
IRIS: I'll cover for you. On Tuesday, I want you to come see me first thing in the morning so that we can discuss what you learned and how you are going to apply it on the job.
Answer the following questions. Then in the space between questions, state why you selected that answer.
