Department Meeting
Juanita, the check-processing supervisor of the Tenth National Bank, has called her five employees together to try to figure out a way to stop the bottleneck in the processing of checks. Below are some of the statements made during the meeting.
JUANITA: ( opening statement ) You are all aware of the bottleneck problem we have. I've called this meeting to try to come up with a solution. I feel that this meeting can help bring us together as a team and help increase our job satisfaction by allowing the group to decide how to solve the problem. I'd like you all to suggest possible solutions. One rule is that no one will make any negative comments about any solution. Any crazy idea is acceptable. Who wants to go first? ( After about four or five minutes, Mary, the informal group leader, interrupts the group meeting. )
MARY: I've already given the best solution. There is no need to keep asking for ideas.
JUANITA: Mary, we are trying to come up with as many creative ideas as possible.
MARY: For what? I've got a good idea.
JUANITA: Let's continue generating ideas. Who will go next? ( Mary looks around the room with an expression that says, "be quiet." After waiting three or four minutes, which feel like a hundred, no one makes a suggestion, so Juanita speaks. )
JUANITA: Let's analyze the seven alternatives we have to determine which is the best.
MARY: Mine is the best.
WILL: Wait a minute, Mary, my idea is as good as yours or better. Tell us why yours is so much better than anyone else's.
MARY: I will if everyone else will.
JUANITA: Wait a minute; these ideas are the group's, not just any one person's. We want to work as a team. ( Will and Mary continue to battle it out. Their two ideas seem to be the most popular. With the battle on, Juanita knows the group will not agree to one solution. )
JUANITA: We are down to two alternatives. Let's vote for the one to use. ( The vote is four for Mary's idea and two for Will's. Will and Juanita vote for his idea, and the rest go with Mary's alternative. )
