Deck 3: Measurement and Dosage Calculations
1
Define each of the terms listed below.
Improper fraction _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A fraction is a way of expressing an amount that is part of a whole. The more parts the whole is divided into, the smaller is each part. The whole can be a set of anything like nine squares or 10000 mg.
The top number of a fraction is known as the numerator and denotes the number of parts a person is taking of the whole. The bottom number of a fraction is known as the denominator and indicates how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
A fraction is also a way of expressing a relationship between two numbers or quantities. Fraction can be of two types: improper and proper. An improper fraction is a fraction in which the value of numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.
The value of the improper fraction is greater than or equal to 1.
For example: 4/5 is an improper fraction because the value of fraction:
= greater than 1.
2
Write abbreviations for these units of measurement.
Milliliter ____________________________________
In the metric system three units are used for measuring volume: mL, L and cubic centimetre (cc). A liter is used as a metric unit for the measurement of volume. The measurement is that one liter consists of 1000 mL.
This can also be explained as it takes 1000 mL of water to equal to 1 L. The vice-versa conversion would be as follows:
The liter (L) is the metric standard unit used to measure the volume of liquid. The other expression millilitre (mL) is the other important term used for measuring volume of liquid in the metric system. The abbreviation for millilitre is mL.
3
Reduce these fractions to the lowest terms.
Reduce these fractions to the lowest terms. =_______________________________ =_______________________________
For making calculations easier, fractions might be reduced to their lowest terms. For reducing a fraction to its lowest terms, the numerator and denominator both should be divided by the largest number that would go into both of them evenly.
In case no such number is present that can evenly divide the numerator as well as denominator, then the fraction can't be divided because it is already in its lowest terms. In this case the fraction is 4/8 that has to be reduced to its lowest terms.
The top and bottom must be divided by the largest number that would divide them evenly; in this case it is 4. The four goes into 4 once, so the 4 can be cancelled and 1 can be written in its place. While four goes into 8 two times, so 8 is cancelled out and 2 is written. Therefore, after reducing to lowest terms the fraction is ½.
Hence, the fraction 4/8 becomes For making calculations easier, fractions might be reduced to their lowest terms.
