1
Hydatid disease is associated with which tapeworm?

A)T.solium
B)Echinococcus granulosus
C)Spirometra mansonoides
D)Echinococcus multilocularis
B
Hydatid disease is associated with E.granulosus.Echinococcus is the smallest of all tapeworms (3 to 9 mm long)with three to five proglottids.Disease symptoms vary with the site and size of the cyst. The presence of one or more cysts (hydatids),which can develop in any tissue, results in echinococcosis (hydatid disease).
2
In E.granulosus infections, the hydatid cysts usually occur in which organ?

A)Stomach
B)Brain
C)Intestines
D)Liver
D
The majority of the hydatid cysts occur within the liver.Cysts in the liver cause chronic abdominal pain and allergic reactions and may result in cholangitis, which is infection of the common bile duct, and cholestasis, which is interference with the flow of bile from the liver.Cysts that develop in the lungs may cause infections and abscesses and result in chronic cough,a shortness of breath, and chest pain.

Epileptic seizures, headaches, and mental disturbances all result from infection with the Taenia solium organism. The definitive diagnosis is based on:

A)positive direct fluorescent antibody test.
B)observance of eggs in the stool.
C)positive India ink stain.
D)identification of cysts in tissue.
D
Cysticercosis, caused by T.solium, can localize in the brain, which causes a condition referred to as neurocysticercosis.Infection can cause epileptic-type seizures, headaches, mental disturbances, meningitis,or sudden death.A definitive diagnosis usually requires the identification of cysticercus larvae in the tissue.
