Deck 9: D: Multi-Group Design: Im Feeling Hot, but Is the Earth Hot, Too
1
How do you identify if a behavior is a key behavior for a study?
A behavior is identified as a key behavior and warrants further examination if it is directly related to the research question at hand.If the behavior in any way influences the variables indicated in the research question, then it needs to be included in the examination.
2
What is the benefit of having more than two groups or levels of an independent variable?
The benefit of having more than two groups or levels of the independent variable is that this allows researchers to identify potential nonlinear or functional relationships among variables of interest. When you only have two groups or one level of independent variable this does not permit additional comparison groups to help interpret the independent variable's influence on the dependent variable.
3
Why are protocols important in experimental designs?
A one-way ANOVA tests whether responses from the different conditions are statistically the same or whether the responses from at least one of the conditions differ from the other conditions in a statistically significant way.It is important to conduct an ANOVA on the manipulation check to ensure the effectiveness of the manipulation before conducting analyses on the different conditions. If a statistical difference is detected, then post-hoc analyses need to be conducted to determine where the difference is among the different conditions.
4
What is the importance of having baseline data in a study?

Write up a results section for a one-way ANOVA given this information: Ninety-two participants were divided among three conditions of beverage types, ratings of pleasure were conducted and ranged from 1 (no pleasure)to 10 (extreme pleasure). The mean rating of pleasure for the carbonated beverage condition was 8.2 with a standard deviation of 1.4.The mean rating of pleasure for the water condition was 5.0 with a standard deviation of .32.The mean rating of pleasure for the alcoholic beverage condition was 8.4 with a standard deviation of 1.7.Assume there is a statistical difference among conditions. You will need to fabricate the rest of the data to write a full results section for this data.
