Drawing a CPM Logic Network
Based upon the following narrative description of a project, draw a CPM logic network that accurately shows the natural dependencies among the activities involved. Be prepared to share your network with the class.
The Sheffield Manufacturing Company is considering the introduction of a new product. The first step in this project will be to design the new product. Once the product is designed, a prototype can be built and engineers can design the process by which the product will be produced on a continuous basis. When the prototype is completed, it will be tested. Upon completing the process design, an analysis will be made of the production cost per unit for the new product. When the prototype testing and the production cost analysis are both finished, the results will be submitted to an executive committee, which will make the final go-ahead decision on the product introduction and establish the price to be charged.
Assuming that the committee's decision is positive, several steps can be taken immediately. The marketing department will begin designing sales literature. The production department will obtain the equipment to be used in the manufacture of the new product, hire the additional personnel needed to staff the process, and obtain an initial stock of raw materials. After sales literature has been designed, it will be printed. The new equipment obtained for the production process will have to be modified slightly. The production personnel will be trained as soon as the equipment modifications are complete, all necessary personnel have been hired, and the initial stock of materials has been obtained. When the printing of the sales literature is completed and the production personnel have been trained, the sales literature will be distributed to the salespersons and the product introduction will be considered complete.
Questions
1. What specific benefits do you think that a CPM network would provide on this project?
2. What information does the CPM network that you created provide that would not be provided by a Gantt chart of the same project?
