90% of those working from home say they work harder and longer, but with more work-life balance.
One in Five Americans Already Working from Home
T he Society for Human Resource Management reports that the work-from-home option is one of the fastest-growing benefits being offered by employers. Some 30 million Americans already spend at least one day per week working from home. Another 3 million never leave home to work. The Telework Research Network reports that:
Employers save about $10,000 per year allowing workers to telecommute at least half time.
Employees save from $1,600 to $6,800 in commuting costs.
47% of workers with telecommuting options say they are "very satisfied" with their jobs.
90% of those working from home say they work harder and longer, but with more work-life balance.
Commuting workers are stuck in traffic for 4.2 billion hours per year while generating 58 million pounds of carbon emissions and burning 2.9 billion gallons of fuel.
These differences tend to fade away when women are in management jobs, and tend to be magnified among those not in managerial roles.
YOUR THOUGHTS
Do these data seem consistent or inconsistent with your experiences, and what you hear from family and friends How important is the telecommuting option for you How do you explain its motivational impact on workers from different age groups and geographical locations What are the potential risks to the employer, and are these risks worth taking given potential motivational gains for the workforce
